The Royal Regiment of Scotland is the modern embodiment of some of the most famous fighting regiments of modern history.

The Regiment is immensely proud of its heritage and traditions. The original 14 Regiments which today form The Royal Regiment of Scotland were raised in the 17th and 18th centuries. Detailed histories can be downloaded for reading on the right.

The Scottish Regiments have always had a strong sense of family, with generations following generations into the ranks. For many today this means following in the footsteps of their forefathers - be they Royal Scots, Kings Own Scottish Borderers, Highland Light Infantry, Royal Scots Fusiliers, Royal Highland Fusiliers, Black Watch, Seaforth Highlanders, Cameron Highlanders, Queens Own Highlanders, Gordon Highlanders, Highlanders or Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

The Regiment ensures that the traditions, memorabilia and the memories of those who have served are stitched into the fabric of everyday life in the battalions.

In order to support and represent the Regiment across all of Scotland and to preserve its links to local and antecedent communities, six Home Headquarters are maintained throughout Scotland. Their main tasks are:

  • to provide a regional focus for the Regiment
  • to promote the heritage of the Regiment
  • to provide a link to the antecedent community
  • to support the provision and management of benevolence and welfare
  • to assist Regimental recruiting by raising awareness of the Regiment and by nurturing potential officers and soldiers
