1 PWRR have been at the forefront of operations since the regiment’s formation in 1992.  These have included deployments to Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan and have resulted in numerous gallantry awards, the most prestigious being the Victoria Cross to Private Johnson Beharry for bravery in the face of the enemy, for his actions in Al Amarah, Iraq in 2004.

As of 2017, the battalion continues to train at the highest level to prepare for deployments as part of the NATO Very High Readiness Joint Task Force focussing on Eastern Europe.

1PWRR has also completed three operational tours of Afghanistan, with tasks ranging from all out war fighting to training and mentoring Afghan National Security Forces.

In recent history, the 1st Battalion has conducted the following operational tours:
3 x tours of Iraq (Op TELIC 4, 8 and 13)
3 x tours of Afghanistan (Op HERRICK 8/9, 15 and 20)
