2 RIFLES is based in Thiepval Barracks, Lisburn on the outskirts of Belfast in Northern Ireland. The Battalion consists of around 500 Riflemen who deploy from their base location on training and operations worldwide. No longer routinely committed to security operations in Northern Ireland, the Battalion forms a part of 38 (Irish) Brigade, with the Brigade’s Headquarters also located in Lisburn. 38 (Irish) Brigade is part of the British Army’s Adaptive Force and has a special focus on Southern Africa.
2 RIFLES is a Light Role Infantry Battalion, paired with its sister Reserve unit: 7th Battalion The Rifles. Light Role Infantry Battalions are trained to deploy worldwide at short notice with light scales of equipment, into terrain ranging from mountains to jungle, demanding fit and agile Riflemen.
2 RIFLES has the strongest hockey team in The Rifles, together with good rugby and football teams. Every Rifleman serving with 2 RIFLES in Northern Ireland receives additional allowances, including 12 free warrants each year to fly home to mainland UK making 2 RIFLES a popular battalion for many soldiers.
