Combat

The regiment has constantly proved itself to be ‘Second to None’ in combat operations worldwide throughout its history. The same fighting sprit and professionalism that was present at Waterloo, during the Crimea and in some of the bloodiest battles of First and Second World Wars has been demonstrated on recent operations In Iraq and Afghanistan.

During its existence thirteen members of the Regiment have been awarded the Victoria Cross, and one the George Cross.

As a light role infantry unit, the 1st Battalion is able to deploy rapidly to assist in Defence Commitments worldwide.

Coldstreamers in recent conflicts have gone in combat on foot, by vehicle or by air, re-enforcing the flexible nature of the regiment that has been developed over the centuries.

Between  2009 and 2010, Operation HERRICK 11 was arguably the regiments hardest fought campaign since World War 2.

Engagements with the Taliban occurred on a daily basis, but the overarching threat was from improvised explosive devices, which restricted freedom of movement and hampered progress throughout the area of operations.

The Battle Group was responsible for introducing the Afghan National Army and Police to its area, and by the end of the tour British troops, Afghan soldiers and Afghan policemen were of equal number across its area.

In 2014 the Battalion deployed on Op HERRICK 20, their third tour of Afghanistan, where they operated in KABUL providing vital security as part ISAF’s ongoing support within the Afghan capital.

More recently the Battalion has deployed on a demanding two month Jungle Warfare exercise in Belize

Whatever the future holds operationally for the British Army, the Coldstream Guards will rise to the challenge delivering the high standards developed over 350 years of excellence.
