  • The Regiment has been awarded 303 Battle Honours of which 13 are unique.
  • The Regiment pioneered Light Infantry tactics and was one of the first to serve as Marines and in the Airborne role.
  • The Regiment has recruited throughout the North-West of England since 1782.
  • Our private soldiers have the unique rank of Kingsman.

Regimental Headquarters

The Regimental Headquarters (RHQ) of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment is based in Preston. It has area offices in Carlisle, Liverpool and Manchester.

RHQ provides the Regiment’s permanent homebase, providing stability and managing its day to day affairs. The tasks of RHQ include;

  • Providing support to the serving soldiers and their families.
  • Providing support to veterans.
  • Sustaining the Regiment. This includes running the Regimental Charity, supporting recruiting and communicating with the Regimental family.
  • Community engagement.
  • Protecting and maintaining the Regiment’s heritage.
  • Providing assurance.

The Regimental Family

Besides the three Battalions, the Regiment is a broad family. Our Colonel-in-Chief is Her Majesty The Queen, The Duke of Lancaster.

We are proud that we have the Freedom of 26 Cities, Towns and Boroughs throughout the North-West of England. This allows us to parade with drums beating, bands playing, colours flying and bayonets fixed. Overseas we have the Freedom of Ladysmith in South Africa.

The Regiment is affiliated to the ship companies of HMS Lancaster. Additionally we are allied to 17 Commonwealth regiments in Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa. We are also affiliated to regiments in France, Estonia and Italy.

The Regiment is also affiliated to the Liverpool and Manchester Officer Training Regiment, 13 Combined Cadet detachments and more than 60 Army Cadet Force detachments.

Regimental charity

The Regimental Charity of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment supports the business of the Regiment and its life. Key areas where it provides financial assistance are;

  • Each year we assist some 200+ members in need.
  • Making grants to battalions for welfare and sporting activities.
  • Supporting Regimental events.
  • Maintaining our bands of Corps of Drums.
  • Preserving our heritage. Especially museums, chapels and memorials.

Each year we assist some 300 members in need. The demands are heavy and increasing. Serving soldiers contribute to the charity by the ‘Day’s Pay’ scheme. For those no longer serving they can help by paying their annual subscription to the Regimental Association.

Also please remember that charity begins at home, and when doing any charity fundraising remember to include the Regiment. Also remember us in your wills. You can donate at any time by sending a cheque to RHQ. Please remember to Gift Aid. Please see link attached on right side. Cheques to be made payable to ‘The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment Charity’.
