6 RIFLES

Welcome to the 6th Battalion The Rifles (6 RIFLES), one of the Regiment's two Army Reserve battalions.  Comprising of 520 part-time soldiers, we come from a wide variety of backgrounds throughout the Southwest and Midlands; if you live in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire or Shropshire we are your local country regiment.

Light Roled Infantry Army Reserve Battalion

Our principal mission is to train and prepare our soldiers for front line operations, most recently in southern Afghanistan; we had people deployed in Helmand since our formation in 2007. We would work in any of the main operating bases, and get involved in exactly the same demanding roles as our full time counter-parts such as routine security patrols, training the Afghan National Security Forces, intelligence gathering, assisting with the provision of logistics supplies for the battle group, and close combat with the enemy. These are all examples of tasks undertaken by the Reservist soldiers of 6 RIFLES.

With the completion of the combat mission in Afghanistan we are now looking at our various individual and team skills to be able to support and work alongside the Regular Army in whatever the next challenge is.

Our training activities are very much focused on developing the skills that people will need, and they are varied, physically and mentally stimulating, well organized and enjoyable! We regularly train overseas, and also participate in adventure training activities, each year we send a group of Riflemen to the Alps for a truly exhilarating skiing experience. In June 2013 we sent our Football team for two weeks to the USA to play various teams and ran a sailing expedition to the Caribbean.

The Battalion is located in the following eight Reservist Centre’s. Our normal Training Evening during the week is from 7.30pm – 9.30pm on a Tuesday night apart from our 10 Platoon location in Hereford which is on a Wednesday.
