6th Battalion The Rifles

Welcome to the 6th Battalion The Rifles (6 RIFLES), one of the Regiment's two Army Reserve battalions.  Comprising of 520 part-time soldiers, we come from a wide variety of backgrounds throughout the Southwest and Midlands; if you live in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire or Shropshire we are your local country regiment.

Light Roled Infantry Army Reserve Battalion

Our principal mission is to train and prepare our soldiers for front line operations in southern Afghanistan; we've had people deployed in Helmand almost non-stop since our formation in 2007. We deploy up to 85 soldiers at a time, and we support our five regular Rifles battalions in the form of individual reinforcements when they deploy.

We can find ourselves in any of the main operating bases, and we get involved in exactly the same demanding roles as our full time counter-parts: routine security patrols, training the Afghan National Security Forces, intelligence gathering, assisting with the provision of logistics supplies for the battle group, and close combat with the enemy are all examples of tasks undertaken by the Army Reserve soldiers of 6 RIFLES.

Our training activities are very much focused on developing the skills that people will need in Afghanistan, and they are varied, physically and mentally stimulating, well organized and enjoyable! We also participate in adventure training activities, and each year we send a group of Riflemen to the Alps for a truly exhilarating skiing experience.

We meet every Tuesday evening in our Army Reserve Centres for training from 7.30 – 9.30pm, and on one weekend per month out in the field. The weekend training exercises start on Friday evening to Sunday afternoon and take place on military training areas such as Salisbury Plain, Dartmoor and Caerwent (near the Severn Bridge), and we also use a variety of live firing ranges and other facilities. We hold an annual two-week exercise, which includes an overseas training exercise every two years or so, and there are various social events held throughout the year.
