Officer recruiting

A career as an Officer in The Mercian Regiment is not for everyone. It is challenging, demanding dedication and commitment to a level that few can meet. Our soldiers are among some of the most highly decorated in The British Army. Brave, intelligent, ruthlessly determined and they have been tempered through gritty experience and long days on arduous operations.

To provide these men with the quality of leadership that their performance commands, only the very best are selected to become Mercian Officers.

You need to be able to deal with pressure, from briefing a room full of people, to coordinating casualty evacuations while under intense fire on the front line in Afghanistan and everything in between - performance is required. You must be fit, as Officers in the Mercian Regiment lead from the front - even when it hurts to do so.

You need to be adaptable and humble; challenges are myriad, taking you all over the world and require that you can work with people from divergent backgrounds as part and in command of a team. You need personality and humour; our soldiers don’t want a checklist of qualities, they want leaders who they relate to and who can inspire them.

Selection

Competition for a commission in the Mercian Regiment is intense. The selection process runs parallel to initial officer selection and beyond through the first two terms at Sandhurst. If you are interested your first step is to come for a sponsorship interview at our Regimental Headquarters in Lichfield.

However, we first require that you complete your briefing course and, as a minimum, achieve a category 2. If you are offered sponsorship, we will assist you through the remainder of your officer selection; providing you with various materials, resources to help you effectively tackle main board as well as opportunities to visit our Battalions and soldiers.

Performance on the Commissioning Course at Sandhurst is scrutinised. Only the very best are commissioned in to The Mercian Regiment and you need to deliver in order to mark yourself out among the competition.
