3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment

Commanding Officer: Lt Col Chris Davies

Location: Lumsden Barracks, Fallingbostel, Germany

Role: Armoured Infantry Battalion

Who we are - The Battalion continues to train hard as the brigade prepares for operations in the near future. The 3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment was formerly The Staffordshire Regiment and we continue to recruit soldiers from Staffordshire, the West Midlands and Birmingham. The strong bonds that soldiers rely upon on operations are created through the close, family orientated approach that we apply to everything we do as a Battalion.

Where we are - The 3rd Battalion is based at Lumsden Barracks, Fallingbostel, in Germany. The large training areas in Germany provide space for the Battalion to exercise and develop its skills and training, especially with the Warrior armoured fighting vehicle. The Battalion deployed on Op HERRICK 14 to Afghanistan over the period Mar - Oct 2011.

Being based in the heart of Europe offers a very exciting lifestyle with good access by road, train and air to many other European countries and cities. Additionally, airports near Fallingbostel make it easy to fly home.

What we do - We are the armoured infantry component of the 7th (Armoured) Brigade - The Desert Rats. We use the Warrior armoured fighting vehicle which allows us to deploy on the ground with significantly more firepower and kit than a light-role infantry Battalion. However, we are first and foremost infanteers and we often deploy on foot to patrol and engage with the local people of the country in which we are operating.

3 MERCIAN on operations

Since formation in 2007 The Mercian Regiment has spent more than two-and-a-half years in Afghanistan.
