Commanding Officer: Lt Col Mark Ellwood MBE
Location: Marne Barracks, Catterick, UK
Role: Light-Role Infantry Battalion
Who we are - The Battalion takes its heritage from the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment, and still draws most of its soldiers from Cheshire and the Wirral. It is this legacy that makes it such an effective Unit within The Mercian Regiment.
The Battalion consists of 5 companies. Three rifle companies, excelling in close combat skills. Each of these is over 100 men strong. These rifle companies are supported by a Support Company and a Headquarters Company.
Where we are - The 1st Battalion is based at Marne Barracks, Catterick in North Yorkshire. We are just a 10 minute drive from the Infantry Training Centre where all new recruits to the Infantry complete their 6 month training package. Catterick has good amenities with Newcastle 1 hour away and access to countryside for walking and adventure training. The Battalion deployed to Afghanistan as part of 4 Mechanized Brigade on Op HERRICK 12 in 2010 and is due to return to Afghanistan in late 2012.
What we do - The Battalion provides 4 Mechanized Brigade with one of its light role Infantry units. This means we have to be ready to conduct operations on foot, by vehicle or by helicopter, in order to allow us to operate at the forefront of operations, interacting with the local populations where we are able to achieve the greatest effect
Since formation in 2007 The Mercian Regiment has spent more than two-and-a-half years in Afghanistan.
