1st Battalion - The Vikings

The Vikings are the 1st Battalion of The Royal Anglian Regiment, a Light Role Infantry Battalion that recruits from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. Based in Woolwich, London, the unit uses the most up to date weapon systems and the most advanced communications available.

The Vikings

The last decade forThe Vikings has been all about demanding operational tours overseas. The Battalion has seen service in Afghanistan in 2002, Iraq in 2005 and then again to Afghanistan in 2007, 2009 and 2012. This high tempo of operational commitments has shaped the Battalion into one of the premiere Light Role infantry battalions in the British Army. Over that period its officers and soldiers have earned many awards for bravery including 10 Military Crosses, 2 DSOs, 3 MBEs and 1 QGM.

If you want a closer look into some of the tours the Battalion has been involved in take a look at the first 'Ross Kemp in Afghanistan'. You'll see how The Vikings trained for and operated in the infamous Sangin Valley in 2007 where they clashed with the Taliban on a daily basis. You can also watch ‘Our War’, again covering the Vikings deployment on Operation Herrick in 2007.

Before Afghanistan and Iraq, the Battalion served in Bosnia, Croatia, Northern Ireland and Belize. In order to remain ready for operations, The Vikings have trained in Africa, Canada, The USA, Oman and throughout the UK.

Light Role - training

Since returning from its most recent spell on operations in Afghanistan in October 2012, the Battalion took part in the latest Infantry/Heavy Armour trials in Canada in 2013 and deployed to Kenya in 2014 on an arduous overseas training exercise. The Battalion is currently training for its next deployment to Afghanistan in 2015 as well as sending a team of soldiers to Mali.

It’s not all about the ‘sharp end’ for The Vikings though. The Battalion has a team taking part in all the major sports including football, rugby and boxing. There are currently two Vikings who are now on the Army Boxing Team. The Battalion also has very successful road cycling, mountain biking, orienteering and teams.

As a leader in the Regiment you must have the intellectual capacity to plan operations under pressure and have the robust mental and physical attributes to see them through to a successful conclusion.

As equipment becomes more sophisticated the demand for soldiers with quick wits is greater than ever. Our Regiment is famous for soldiers with a team spirit based on mutual respect and trust.
