4th Battalion Update – December 2012
Recent events have been dominated by Operational deployments and Future Reserves 2020 (FR20).
We welcomed the safe return from Op HERRICK of our mobilised soldiers and those who supported the Olympics.
Operations and Training
The majority of soldiers deployed to Op HERRICK 16 went with 3 YORKS, where they acquitted themselves well. Those who deployed elsewhere have also received positive reports. The Op OLYMPICS volunteers enjoyed their experience in what was the first occasion the TA had been mobilised for operations in the UK.
The efforts of Private Simon Sunderland (Op HERRICK 15) were recognised by the award of a Joint Commanders Commendation on Operational Honours list and recognition as the best reservist at The Sun Military Awards - "The Millies".
The Welfare Team are ensuring that correct processes are being followed for those back from operations and they continue to contribute significant support for the regimental Family and, in particular 3 YORKS.
The highlight of the period was Exercise ROMAN STAR, an overseas training exercise (OTX) hosted by an Italian aviation regiment near Venice. This was the first of a series of exercises delivered through the FR20 betterment package and was enjoyed by all who deployed. It provided the opportunity to conduct dismounted close combat in a challenging environment. As a test exercise for Army HQ it was closely monitored and visitors were impressed by our use of the opportunity.
A team took part in Exercise CAMBRIAN PATROL and two teams from D Company participated in BAKKERS BLUFF, an international military competition in Holland, which saw them coming first and second in class.
Manning and Recruiting
Figures show Battalion strength has increased; recruiting remains our non-operational main effort.
Key Appointments
The following appointments took place:
- Major M WATSON appointed Training Major (V)
- Major L KNOCKLES appointed Quartermaster
- Lieutenant J HOULTON appointed Regimental Administration Officer (V)
Sport and Adventurous Training
4 YORKS mounted 2 Adventurous Training expeditions – diving in the Ascension Islands and mountain biking in Chamonix, as well as a number of UK based activities.
Firm Base
We continue to provide the lead on local authority liaison to support activity in York, Selby, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley. A huge raft of community engagement activities have been undertaken ranging from supporting Welcome Yorkshire’s campaign to re-brand ‘On Ilkley Moor Ba’that’, to appearances on BBC’s ‘The One Show’, to ensuring regimental representation in all Freedom Towns on Remembrance Sunday.
Future
Next year we will conduct an OTX – Ex IBERIAN STAR 1 will take place in Spain in June 2013.
