2nd Battalion Update – October 2012

Operations
The 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards) is currently the Resident Infantry Battalion (RIB) for Cyprus Operations having recently handed over the Theatre Reserve Battalion (TRB) commitment to the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

The TRB role was challenging and although the Battalion did not deploy en masse during its tenure; there has not been an instant during the Battalion’s 12-month commitment when there was not multiple people forward in Afghanistan, contributing fully to both Operation HERRICK 15 and 16.

The current role of the Battalion is to provide security to the UK strategic military sites located in Cyprus as well as providing a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) for short-notice missions and tasks on island.  These can be anything from peace keeping operations to assisting the police and fire services.

There is no operational link between the 2 YORKS and the British contingent of the United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

Sports and Adventurous Training
A number of sporting activities and events are due to occur in the coming months. The Battalion Football team are proving to be difficult to beat and there will be teams entered in both the Army Alpine and Nordic Skiing competitions over the winter period. There will also be an inter-Company boxing competition in December this year plus a Kayaking expedition due to take place in 2013.

Future
Aside from these Operational commitments, the Regimental merger sits firmly in the minds of each individual within the Battalion and management of each and every man is an enduring effort right up to the point at which this will take place.
