Specialisation

Specialist weapons
Soldiers will be trained to an extremely high standard to use rifles (SA80 A2), light machine guns, general purpose machine guns, sniper rifles, underslung grenade launchers, heavy machine guns, mortars and anti-armour weapons (Javelin).

Reconnaissance
The recce platoon are the eyes and ears of the Battalion and specialise in close observation.

Communications / IT
The signals platoon keep the essential information flowing within the Battalion

Pioneers
The pioneer platoon are the engineers of the Infantry.

Driving
Drivers are essential and the Battalions' drivers have to be trained to drive everything from a motorbike to an Warrior armoured vehicle.

Medics
First aid is critical and each combat team has individuals trained to be combat medics.

Physical fitness
Fitness is paramount in the Army and each Battalion has its own Physical Training Instructors who undertake a demanding course to become the fittest of the fit.

Musicians
The Pipes and Drums are iconic to the Scottish Infantry but few realise that these individuals are soldiers first and then musicians.
