31 July 2009 - BAND CONCERT IN SHEFFIELD ON 3RD AUGUST.  The Band of The King's Division will perform a free concert in the Peace Gardens on Monday night (3 August).  The Yorkshire Regiment and Sheffield City Council have organised the performance which will take place between 7.30 to 9pm.  A collection in aid of Help for Heroes and the Regimental Welfare Charity will take place during the performance.
 
Major Bob Heron, commenting on the concert said "is part of cementing our friendship and ties with the places where we recruit most of our soldiers from".  Earlier in the day the Freedom of Rotherham will be granted to the Regiment in a ceremony and parade carried out by the 3rd Battalion.
 
30 July 2009 - COAST TO COAST CHARITY RIDE [3 YORKS].  The Help for Heroes charity hopes to gain from the pedal power of Yorkshire soldiers.  The team of 3rd Battalion soldiers plan to cycle from Blackpool to Hull and raise sponsorship money along the way.
 
 
The senior man on the team is Lieutenant Colonel Tom Vallings and he is accompanied by soldiers from across the Battalion.
 
29 July 2009 - FREEDOM OF ROTHERHAM ON 3RD AUGUST [3 YORKS].  The Yorkshire Regiment will receive the Freedom of Rotherham on Monday 3rd August.  Soldiers from across Yorkshire will be represented by the 3rd Battalion who will travel from their Wiltshire Barracks to parade through the Borough.  The parade will set off at 1400 hours and for more information visit our Ceremonial Events page.
 
28 July 2009 - WARMINSTER COMINGS AND GOINGS [3 YORKS].  This week sees the return of Alma Company 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, from Bagdad.  The company become the last British Army infantry sub-unit to leave the country - a job well done.  In the meantime, Burma Company will deploying to Afghanistan as battle casualty replacements this week.  The Burma Company Group includes a platoon from Corunna and a fire support group from Somme Company.  The remainder of Corunna and Somme are on notice to move for further reinforcements to Afghanistan.
 
27 July 2009 - YORKSHIRE WARRIORS WELCOMED HOME [1 YORKS].  Thousands of well-wishers turned out in towns across Yorkshire last week to welcome home soldiers from 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment who have recently been deployed to Iraq and Kosovo.  Read the full Defence News story. 
 
24 July 2009 - 1ST BATTALION FINISHES OFF TOUR IN LEEDS [1 YORKS].  The 1st Battalion week of successful homecoming parades came to a close in the City of Leeds today.  Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Price led his Battalion around the city centre in front of cheering crowds supporting their efforts over the last year.  The Battalion now looks forward to a well earned rest at home with friends and family before reassembling in the late summer at Oxford Barracks in Munster.

23 July 2009 - FREEDOM PARADES IN HULL AND BEVERLEY [1 YORKS].  The sun shone and the crowds turned out in their thousands to support the 1st Battalion during their homecoming parades in East Yorkshire.  The press estimated the turn out in Hull at around 10,000 people who witnessed the spectacle.  Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Price OBE, 1st Battalion Commanding Officer said, "crowds up to six deep along the route waving flags is a remarkable event".
 
 
The Beverley parade was made more memorabe for the town's cryer and the ceremonial closing of the six-hundred year old town bar (gate house).  Parade Commander, Major Aaron Townend, was required to bang on the doors with his sword to gain entry to the town, very much like the opening of Parliament ceremony.  Visit the ceremonial events pages for more information on the Kingston upon Hull and Beverley parades.
 
22 July 2009 - YEOMAN CUP FINAL 2009 [3 YORKS].  3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment defeat Royal School of Mechanical Engineering (RSME) in the final of the 2009 Rugby League Yeoman Cup.  Despite numbers of the squad preparing for or away on operations, the team came through during a fantastic occasion at the Military Rugby Stadium in Aldershot.  That takes the Battalion's tally to five victories in the last seven years of the Army's Rugby League Cup.  Read the full match report here.
 
 
22 July 2009 - MEDAL PRESENTATION AT SCARBOROUGH CRICKET GROUND [1 YORKS].   Scarborough Cricket Club was the venue for a presentation of campaign medals to soldiers from the 1st Battalion.  The presentation took place before the start of today's Yorkshire vs Nottingham cricket match.  The 1st Battalion's Corps of Drums provided musical accompaniment whilst Yorkshire County Cricket Club Chairman, Mr Bill Mustoe, made the presentation.
 
 
21 July 2009 - YORK MEN SIGN ON FOR REGIMENT.  Three recruits signed on the dotted line today in an attestation ceremony to join British Army and specifically The Yorkshire Regiment. The event was witnessed by Lieutenant Colonel Price, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion and Colonel Barley and made more special by taking place in The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire Museum in York. The new recruits - Jack Reed, Luke Topham, Lee Todkill - start training at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick and then join a Battalion early next year.
 
 
After the ceremony, the new recruits were invited to witness the 1st Battalion exercise the Freedom of the City of York.  The Battalion exercised the Freedom of Harrogate in the day.  The parades marked the start of a week of homecoming parades and sporting events.
 
19 July 2009 - DRUMS AND MEDALS AT ODSAL STADIUM [1 YORKS].   1st Battalion soldiers received their campaign medal at Sunday's Super-League game between Bradford Bulls and Wigan Warriors.  The soldiers paraded in front of the main stadium prior to kick off, and before the rain arrived, to receive recognition for their service in Iraq and Kosovo.  Bradford Bulls club chairman, Mr Peter Hood, presented the medals and the Corps of Drums then performed for the rubgy fans.
 
 
 
16 July 2009 - 1ST BATTALION MEDALS PARADE [1 YORKS].  The 1st Battalion conducted a medals parade at Oxford Barracks in Munster, Germany.  Officers and soldiers received campaign medals for their recent service in Iraq, B Company received medals for service in Kosovo and some soldiers received medals for service in Afghanistan.  The Colonel of the Regiment, General Sir Nicholas Houghton KCB CBE, also presented Accumulated Service Medals, Commanding Officers Commendations and a Mention In Dispatches to selected soldiers.
 
 
During the medal parade, Private Andrew Troup had his Mention in Dispatches read out for his actions while on operations in Afghanistan.  Read more about him and his award here.

15 July 2009 - 11 LIGHT BRIGADE TO REPLACE 19 LIGHT BRIGADE [2 YORKS].  11 Light Brigade will command the majority of British units serving in Afghanistan.  Their deployment is expected to last until April 2010.  The 2nd Battalion are preparing to deploy, as well as a Company from the 3rd Battalion and over sixty individually mobilised soldiers from the 4th Battalion.  Read more here.
 
11 July 2009 - KNAVESMIRE MEDALS PRESENTATION [4 YORK].  Territorial Army soldiers from the 4th Battalion received their Operation HERRICK medals in front of race-goers at the Knavesmire Racecourse in York.
 
 
The mobilised soldiers of Delta Platoon returned from service in Kabul, Afghanistan and one soldier served with the 1st Battalion in Basra, Iraq.  In total, twenty-six soldiers were presented operational medals by Colonel Jeremy Fox TD DL, Deputy Colonel of the Regiment.  For more, visit the 4th Battalion Medal Parade page.
 
10 July 2009 - THE YORKSHIRE REGIMENT JOURNAL EDITION 7 - AUTUMN 2009.  Contributors to The Regimental Journal are reminded to start preparing copy for the next edition.  Please note that the theme is "the TA", with emphasis on 4 YORKS.  Submissions must be with the Regimental Editor by 1 September 2009.  Check the Regimental Journal page for contributors guidance notes.
 
9 July 2009 - LEGENDS OF LEAGUE VS THE ARMY RUGBY MATCH.  A select group of Army Rugby League players (including Yorkshire Regiment players) will challenge a invitation team of Yorkshire Rugby League professionals, in aid of Help For Heroes.  The game will take place at "The Jungle", home of Castleford Tigers RLFC, on Saturday 25 July with kick off at 1500 hours.  Admission will be a minimum donation of £2 per person to aid injured soldier, old and new. This is the third year of this challenge match and Yorkshire Regiment Recruiters will also be in attendance.
 
8 July 2009 - AFGHANISTAN MEDALS FOR YORKSHIRE REGIMENT [4 YORKS].  Territorial Army soldiers of the 4th Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment will receive their operational medals this Saturday at the Knavesmire Racecourse York.  A composite platoon of soldiers, from across the battalion, recently returned from a six-month tour in Kabul Afghanistan and will receive their Operation HERRICK medals.  The presentation will take place in front of family, friends and race-goers before the start of this weekend's John Smith's Cup Golden Jubilee race meeting.
 
8 July 2008 - STOCKTON-ON-TEES VOTES TO GRANT FREEDOM.  Today, at a special meeting held in Stockton-on-Tees, the council voted to grant the Freedom of the Borough to The Yorkshire Regiment.  The Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Paul Kirton, spoke of his delight and looked forward to arranging a mutually agreed date for the honour to be officially handed over the Regiment and to parade through the streets of Stockton.
 
7 July 2009 - ALMA TO RETURN FROM IRAQ [3 YORKS].   Alma Company will be the last Infantry sub-unit to serve in Iraq with their return at the end of this month.  They deployed to Baghdad in May 2009 as the Protection Force for Senior British Military Staff, taking over from A Coy 1 YORKS.  They also provide a Force Protection Platoon for the NATO Training Mission at the Iraqi Military Academy in Ar Rustamiyah, east Baghdad. 
 
 
3 YORKS, formerly the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, was one of the first units into Iraq during the invasion in 2003, deployed again in 2005 and will provide the last sub unit to leave theatre.  Alma Company was very much, first in, last out. 
 
6 July 2009 - WAR OF THE ROSES CHARITY BOXING EVENT.  A charity boxing evening called "The War of The Roses" will take at the Royal Armouries in Leeds on 12 November 2009.  The Yorkshire Regiment and Yorkshire Regiment teams will compete in aid of Help For Heroes and Regimental Charities.  Nine Boxing bouts from across the weight categories will determine the true champions of the North.
