Regimental History
Our history begins in 1680 with the formation of the Earl of Plymouth's Regiment of Foot, later known as the 4th or King's Own.
The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment was formed on 1st July 2006 from the King's Own Royal Border Regiment, the King's Regiment and the Queen's Lancashire Regiment. The King's Own Royal Border Regiment was itself formed from the merger of the King's Own Royal Regiment and the Border Regiment. It traces its history back to 1680 and the formation of the Earl of Plymouth's Regiment for service in Tangiers. The King's Regiment was formed from the merger of the King's Regiment (Liverpool) and the Manchester Regiment. The King's Regiment traces its origins to the formation Princess Anne of Denmark's Regiment of Foot in 1685. Finally, the Queen's Lancashire Regiment was formed from the East Lancashire Regiment, the South Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Volunteers) and the Loyal (North Lancashire) Regiment. The Queen's Lancashire Regiment's history dates back to 1689 and the formation of Viscount Castleton's Regiment of Foot.
The history of the three Regiments that formed the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment can be traced in a Portable Document File which can be found here. For more information visit the Regiment's Museums. Details can be found by following the link on the left. Family historical enquiries should be directed to the curator in each museum.
