Officer Selection Process
If you wish to become a Gurkha Officer please contact the Army Careers Adviser (ACA) who covers your school or university. Alternatively, apply on-line via the Army Jobs website.
Recruiting Group will then confirm your qualifications and put you in touch with the relevant ACA. The ACA will then offer you an interview and pass your details to our Regimental Secretary.
He will write to you inviting you to an informal interview, and may subsequently arrange a visit for you to the UK-based Gurkha battalion. This will normally take place over five days in Shorncliffe, Kent. During this visit you can expect to meet the officers and men of the Regiment.
You will be asked to take part in some of the ongoing activities and will be given a flavour of life as an officer in a Gurkha battalion. These familiarisation visits are relaxed affairs - we are not looking to put you through your paces, although there may be one or two physical challenges.
The aim is to help you decide if this is a path you wish to follow. Alongside this process, you will need to apply for a commision in the Army. For this, you will need to attend the Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB) at Westbury in Wiltshire and your ACA will arrange this with you.
If successful, you will attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) for a one year trraining course. Towards the end of this course all Officer Cadets will go through a formal interview process known as the Regimental Selection Boards to decide which regiment they will join.
If you have applied for The Royal Gurkha Rifles, you will be interviewed by a panel of senior officers who decide whether you will be offered a place in the Regiment.
On successful completion of the Commisioning Course, you will receive your Commision and join your battalion ready to take command of your platoon for the first time.
