Letter to potential recruits

Lieutenant Colonel C R J Weir Lieutenant Colonel C R J Weir

Dear Potential Ranger

As the Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment, I am very pleased to have the opportunity to write to those considering a career in the 1st Battalion.

The Battalion is a worldwide-deployable Air Assault Battalion based at Tern Hill, Shropshire, which lies between Liverpool and Birmingham. We form part of 16 Air Assault Brigade, the Army's high readiness rapidly-deployable formation. As an air assault unit we work alongside Apache attack helicopters, support helicopters and airborne forces to deliver capability wherever it is required in the world.

In recent years the Battalion has deployed on a range of operations to the Balkans, Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. Between operational engagements the men of the Royal Irish have built up considerable experience through training in Canada, America, Kenya, Norway, Botswana and the jungles of Belize, Brunei and Jamaica. The Battalion are about to deploy on operations to Afghanistan, which for some will be their third tour to that country.

The role of an Air Assault Battalion requires high calibre soldiers, confident enough to operate the most modern equipment and weaponry in such extremes as the deserts of Iraq or the cold mountains of Afghanistan. The Irish soldier is well known for his spirit and professionalism, an aggressive war fighter and yet a compassionate peacekeeper. In the Royal Irish, we are proud of our strong heritage, tradition, professionalism and operational reputation. We have several soldiers serving with the UK's Special Forces.

If you join us, you will rapidly become part of this unique team and have numerous opportunities for travel, adventure, sport and responsibility. Training, education and development of skills go hand in hand with operations and excitement. We offer qualifications from specialist driving licences to snipers, anti-tank operators to parachuting. Successful Rangers quickly take their first steps on the promotion ladder.

I am keen to recruit young men who are up for a life of adventure and excitement as a Ranger in the 1st Battalion. If you are fit and think you have what it takes, call the Recruiting Team on 02890 420 306 to find out more. Why not take the first steps to join the best Battalion in the British Army and become a Ranger in the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment?
