Role & Operations

LIGHT ROLE INFANTRY
Light Role Infantry battalions operate with minimal transport and sometimes almost entirely on foot.  They are equipped with the full range of small arms, mortars, anti tank weaponry and surveillance equipment.  A Light Role battalion is a versatile organisation that can work in support of Armoured and Mechanised brigades to dominate urban areas or control mountainous terrain, deserts, forests and jungles. 
 
1st Battalion (1 YORKS)
Operational Deployments:  Iraq (Op TELIC 9:  Nov 06-May 07), Germany (Oxford Barracks. Munster)(Aug 2008-), Kosovo (Op OCULUS:  Sep 08-Mar 09) and Iraq (Op TELIC 11:  Nov 08-May 09).
Recent Overseas Training:  Falkland Islands (Jan-Feb 08) and South Africa (Jan-Mar 08).
 
2nd Battalion (2 YORKS)
Operational Deployments:  Kosovo (Op OCULUS: Mar-Sep 06) and Afghanistan (Op HERRICK 7:  Sep 07-Apr 08 and Sep 09 - Apr 10).
Recent Overseas Training:  Falkland Islands (Sep-Nov 08),
 
ARMOURED INFANTRY
Armoured Infantry battalions are equipped with the WARRIOR, SCIMITAR and BULLDOG.  The high levels of protection, firepower, ground mobility and sustainability enjoyed by Armoured Infantry make them well suited to providing both shock action and the endurance element of any operational force.  WARRIOR is armed with a 30mm Rarden Cannon, capable of engaging vehicle and dismounted targets out to 2000m.  It carries a crew of 10: driver, commander, gunner and 7 infantry soldiers.
 
3rd Battalion (3 YORKS)
Operational Deployments:  Iraq (Op TELIC Oct 04-May 05 (as 1 DWR) and May-Jul 09), Afghanistan (Op HERRICK :  Sep 09-Apr 10) 
Recent Overseas Training:  Canada (Aug-Oct 2008)
 
TERRITORIAL ARMY INFANTRY
Territorial Army (Reserve) Infantry are an essential part of the Infantry as a whole, representing over 25% of its total.  TA Infantry are a fully integrated part of the order of battle.  As, such they train as Light Role Battalions, capable of supporting current operations or overseas deployments with individual volunteers or groups mobilised up to company strength.  Additionally, 4 YORKS forms one of the core units in 15 North East Brigade's regional Civil Contingency Reaction Force (CCRF), which stands by to assist local government agencies and the emergency services in time of crisis.
 
4th Battalion (4 YORKS)
Operational Deployments:  Iraq (Op TELIC), Afghanistan (Op HERRICK), Kosovo (Op OCULUS) and Cyprus (Op TOSCA).
Overseas Training (Company Exercises):  Cyprus and Albania (2006), USA and South Africa (2007), USA and Canada (2008), BATUS Canada (2009) and mobilised individuals to exercise in South Africa, Falkland Islands and Cyprus (2008) with other YORKS Battalions.
