Battalion Update - June 2011

This period has focussed on training the Operation HERRICK 15 (Op H15) and delivering family and employer support briefings.  We have also provided input into policy development for Future Reserve 2020 (FR20).

Operations

We continue to support various operations on an individual basis and in the recent mobilisation of fifty soldiers for Op H15.  Forty will deploy to 1 YORKS and the remainder across 20 Armoured Brigade.

Training

Mission Specific Training (MST) has dominated with a battle camp in Otterburn.  In February, we completed the first series of exercises designed to provide level 2 Combat Training (CT2).  This was the first time in 2 years that this level of training had been achieved.

Attendance at TA Combat Infantryman's Course (CIC) has not been high but we had some notable successes with 3 top student awards.  Three soldiers were also awarded an A grade on their Potential Junior Non-Commission Officer (PJNCO) cadres.

Manning & Recruiting

Uncertainty over the future shape of the TA infantry has not helped but we have Additional Duties Contracts (ADC) for our recruiters to maintain recruiting momentum.

Recruiting has focused on Hull with an initiative launched at the RFL Super League match between Hull KR and Leeds Rhinos.  We supported the Malton Food Lovers festival and Companies continue to support a wide range of local Community Engagement (CE) activities.

Key Appointments

  • Padre Andrew Martlew appointed to cover the absence of Padre Pyke.

Sport and Adventurous Training

The Triathlon team are 2nd Division Champions and took part in the ARMY Championships.  Soldiers skied in Ex. ALPINE SLIDE in France.  We have participated in "Race the Sun" - one of only two TA teams.

Future

The Band will support the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final in August.

MST for the Op H16 will be the priority.  Annual Camp will take place in Germany in September and there will be a further CT2 exercise.

Establishment of the Regimental Rear Operations Group (ROG) will drive much activity as we ramp up to support families of those deploying across the regiment.
