Brigadier Mike Griffiths was commissioned into the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment in 1979 and has served in the UK, Cyprus, the USA and the Falklands and on operations in NI, Cyprus, Bosnia and Afghanistan.
During his early regimental service he was IO, Adjutant and commanded a company at the King’s Division Depot. He attended Division 2 of the Army Staff College in 1992 and from there was posted to Headquarters British Forces Cyprus as SO2 J3 Land Operations.
In 1994 he took over his rifle company in Londonderry and followed this by a tour as Chief Instructor Old College at RMAS.
On promotion to Lieutenant Colonel he became BLO Force Development in the Pentagon and then took over command of 1 KORBR in 2000. During command he took the Battalion to Bosnia as the UK Armoured Battle Group and moved them to Episkopi in Cyprus.
He was fortunate to be in command when the Battalion received new Colours.
He left on promotion in 2002 to become DCOS 4th Division, deployed to Afghanistan as COMBRITFOR and moved to Colonel MS(A) in 2004. Promoted to Brigadier in 2006 he commanded 42 (North West) Brigade for two years and then was Director Personal Services (Army) from September 2008 to August 2011.
He became Director Infantry in April 2011. Regimentally he assumed the role of Colonel, The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment in August 2009.
He is married to Sue, a practicing community midwife and they have four grown-up children, two of whom served in the Army. Tragically their eldest son Andrew died from wounds received in Afghanistan in September of 2010.
