Initial training

Adult Entry

If, following your two-day course at an Army Development and Selection Centre (ASDC), you are selected for initial (Phase 1) training you will be trained at the Army Training Centre Pirbright (ATC Pirbright), Surrey.

All AAC Soldiers begin their career with a 14 week course at ATC Pirbright. Here you will learn military skills such as:

  • Foot drill.
  • How to handle and fire a weapon.
  • How to live and work in the open.
  • How to tackle an obstacle course.

You will also develop your stamina and fitness and will be stretched further than you thought possible, toughening up both physically and mentally.

Having mastered basic military skills on completion of your training you will take your place in the Pass Off Parade. This is held in front of an invited audience of parents, relatives and friends.

Junior Soldier

If you are a school leaver aged between 16 and 17 years old on joining, the Army Training Regiment Winchester (ATR Winchester) offers a unique opportunity to learn as you earn. Your military career will start here with a 23 week initial training course. Through first class military training and vocational education, we help you gain the soldiering skills needed in the modern Army and get a head start in a challenging and fulfilling career.

Once you have completed your initial training at ATR Winchester you will move to the Army Aviation Centre, Middle Wallop, in order to complete your special-to-arm training.
