Further Qualifications

Phase 2 trainees learning marshalling signals with the Lynx aircraft Aviation or telecommunication apprenticeships are provided, at the Army Aviation Centre, for all Phase 2 trainees.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are run for the Army Air Corps (AAC) by Nord Anglia Education, who currently run the apprenticeship at the Armed Forces College, Harrogate. Most of the apprenticeship is completed while at AACen, while the remainder is finished within the first few months of a first posting to an AAC Field Army Regiment. As well as a Diploma and technical certificate, Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships include key or functional skills in english and mathematics that is equivilent to GCSE education.

Level 4 Diplomas for Senior Non Commissioned Officers following promotion are currently being trialled.

Driving Lessons

Driving lessons are provided at Middle Wallop during Phase 2 Training. Trainees can obtain a car (Category B) licence and then progess to an HGV licence (Category C+E). All driving lessons are provided free of charge.

Promotion Courses

Following a recommendation for promotion individuals will attend a series of Command, Leadership and Management (CLM) courses to prepare for the additional responsibility. These CLM courses have been accredited to Diplomas, Certificates and Awards from the Institute of Leadership and Management and the Chartered Management Institute. City and Guilds Senior Awards are available for Staff Sergeant (SSgt) and above. Other links have been made with higher education institutions allowing personnel to obtain Foundation, Full and Masters degrees. These can be taken on a distance learning basis such as learning at work or e-learning. Assistance with the cost of undertaking external courses is provided via the MOD's Learning Credits scheme.

Exemption

Completion of CLM modules and time served in post provides a pathway to a degree as well as providing an exemption for the first two thirds of certain full honours courses. This may be equivalent to credits of 240 points out of the 360 required. Postgraduate exemptions are also available.

Teaching Qualifications

Instructors have access to 'Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector' teaching qualifications through completion of their training. It is also possible to study towards Level 4 Diplomas or Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) qualifications.

Pilot Training

The early pilot training courses grant Open University degree credit points. Additionally, trainee pilots can obtain a Private Pilot Licence for both General Aviation (PPL(A)) and Helicopters (PPL(H)) during Elementary Flying Training at Barkston Heath and Single Engine Rotary Wing training at Shawbury.

Officer Training

Officer training, from the Commissioning Course at Sandhurst onwards, provides opportunities to gain management qualifications and membership of professional bodies. Exemption from various stages of degree courses and Open University credits may be awarded.
