Soldier Profile

Gunner Joe Sutcliffe

I was born in West Yorkshire where I went to South Craven School in Sutton.  I went to Bradford Army Careers office in 2005, where I was told all about the King's Troop and that I would be working with horses.  This sounded ideal for me because I already own two horses and wanted to further my skills in horsemanship, I was already competing in show junmping to a high standard.  I was sent to the King's Troop on a Potential Recruits course which is held at the King's Troop and lasts 3 days.  In those 3 days I was assigned to a Sub Section and got to work in a stables containing 18 horses.  On the final day of the course I was interviewed by an Officer who told me that I had been successful in passing the course and would be recommended for Mounted Gunner.

I started at the Army Foundation College January 2006, where I carried on riding in my sports and skills evenings, I also took part in triathlons.  I passed out in December 2006 and was sent to the Royal School of Artillery at Larkhill.  At Larkhill I got my B and B plus E licence and spent time at the stables taking part in the basic Military riding skills course. In April 2007 I was posted to the King's Troop and sent to work in A Sub Section.  Since being in the King's Troop I have ridden behind the gun on ceremonial parades.  I have performed dismounted duties at Widsor and also at the Queen's Life Guard.  I have ridden at the Royal Windsor Horse show.  Currently I am a centre driver and hoping to move to a wheel drivers slot by next season.  I have also competed in the Troop race at Larkhill, and I am currently studying NVQ level 2 in Horse Management.
