106 Regt RA(V)

Air Defence Regiment
106 (Yeomanry) Regiment is a truly unique unit within the Royal Artillery, not only is it the Army's only reserve Air Defence Regiment, but it is the only one with the mixed capabilities of Rapier FSC and HVM making it the most versatile Regiment of its type.

Anti Aircraft Firing Units
Based in London but with units on the South Coast and the Midlands , 106 provides reinforcements as Anti Aircraft Firing Units to Regular Army regiments in times of need.
Currently 106 have 3 Air Defence sub units, or Batteries, they are based at
- 210 (Staffordshire) Battery equipped with Rapier in Wolverhampton
- 265 (Home Counties) Battery also equipped with Rapier based in Grove Park, South East London
- 457 (Hampshire Yeomanry) Battery equipped with the High Velocity Missile (HVM) system based in Southampton

Equipment
Rapier FSC Launcher
The launcher is the business end of RAPIER FSC holding 8 missiles. It can be deployed independently with one CCU to engage aircraft and it contains the thermo-optical sight for real time thermal video feed.

Rapier Tracker Radar
The tracker radar is an independent tracker that can track, lock on and guide a missile to a target with outstanding accuracy (99.9% hit rate). It can also be set on its own independent search pattern to look for targets.

Rapier Surveillance Radar
The surveillance radar sends a real time overhead picture to the CCUs. Displaying up to 75 potential targets it can interrogate them all and recognises friendly or hostile aircraft.

High Velocity Missile Lightweight Multiple Launcher (HVM LML)
HVM LML is a man portable Close Air Defence Weapon System used to counter the threat posed by low level air attacks on specified targets on the battlefield. The Weapon System is operated by a detachment of 3 who are inserted onto the battlefield by helicopter, foot or Pinzgauer. The Missile has a maximum range of 5.5km and travels at a speed of Mach 3.5.

Starstreak Missile
Starstreak is a short range surface-to-air missile manufactured by Thales Air Defence Limited, it is also known as Starstreak HVM. After launch the missile accelerates to about Mach 3.5, at which point it launches three laser beam riding submunitions. The use of three submunitions increases the likelihood of a successful hit on the target

L85A2 (SA80) Individual Weapon
The SA80 is the combat proven issued rifle of the British army capable of automatic and single shot firing of the 5.56mm round. Soldiers are highly trained in the use of this weapon and have to pass an annual test on handling and firing it.

Command and Control Units (CCUs)
The CCUs allow the operators to control all operations of the system with simple menu options. They display a thermal picture from the launcher and an overhead radar picture from the surveillance radar

Rapier Missiles
The missiles come in 2 variants; both missiles travel at over 2 times the speed of sound and look very similar. The mark 2A is a hittile with just a simple explosive that will detonate when coming in to contact with a target. The mark 2B has a proximity fuse and detonates when near the target, showering the immediate area with over 1000 tungsten cubes which will shred any target.

L7A2 General Purpose Machine Gun
The L7A2 GPMG, or 'GIMPY', is a 7.62x61mm belt-fed general purpose machine gun. The GPMG has been in service with the British military for decades. The GPMG can be carried by foot soldiers and employed as a light machine gun (LMG), a fold-out bipod is used to support the GPMG in the LMG role. I can be used in offensive and defensive actions and is often tasked to provide local defence cover for the Air Defence Firing Units.

What is the Territorial Army?
Without the TA the British Army would not be able to function. Accounting for one quarter of the Army's total capability, the TA has a vital role to play in military operations, both abroad and closer to home. It cannot do this without the contribution of its members - motivated people committed to achieving challenging goals; social people hungry for new and interesting experiences; everyday people intent on getting more out of life. People like you.
