Soldier Profile

Gunner Geraint English

19-year-old Gunner Geraint English is helping to keep his comrades in Afghanistan safe - thanks to his radio and signals expertise.

Gnr English joined the Army in 2007 and is on his first operational tour.

Based in Forward Operating Base (FOB) Nolay in Helmand province, Afghanistan, he is part of the Sangin-based Fire Support Team (FST). Teams like this work hard to provide security in the local areas, and progress can be seen by the increase in trading in the area, and the number of locals who are returning to their homes.

But as Gnr English explains, attacks can still occur in parts of the region. "On a recent patrol, my section came under fire for the first time. In the confusion I was able to go forward and help the platoon commander get the team to safety and look for a suitable spot for a helicopter to land, so that an injured friend could be evacuated."

Looking back on the incident, he recalls how well his training had prepared him: "I did not panic. I just instinctively got on with what I had to do. As it turned out, my reports helped to assist the FST to get air assets which ended the contact with the enemy. A good result all round," he says.

"As a signaller, I provide the communications for the FST. This is very important, as they are the people who provide artillery and air support for troops on the ground. I need to be good at my job as any mistakes or delays in passing messages could have bad consequences for the guys on the ground needing help."
