Battery training

Light Gun Firing

The home of the Gunners
14 Regiment is the Royal Artillery Training Regiment and is responsible for training the future generations of officers and soldiers. As well as all the training, a large proportion of the life support for Royal Artillery Barracks, the home of the Gunners, and the units within it, is also provided by 14 Regiment. Truly a multi discipline Regiment, manpower is drawn from across all Royal Artillery Regiments, including the TA. The Regiment has three Batteries; one gun battery, 34 Battery, one weapon and support battery, 1st Battery and one soldier training battery, 24 Battery.

The Young Officers' Branch is also a part of the Regiment; this branch trains the Young Officers after they have completed their initial training at Sandhurst. 34 Battery is equipped with six AS90 and six Lt Gun and fires in excess of 20,000 rounds each year to enable all the critical pre deployment operational training for the deployable Regiments to take place. 1st Battery, the weapon and support Battery, is equipped with a variety of weapon systems in service with other Regiments, including MLRS, HVM, ASP, Lt Gun and AS90 and uses all these complex weapon systems in support of the training delivered by the Royal School of Artillery and Army level demonstrations.

The Gunner Recruiting Team and Display Troop are also a part of 1st Battery. The soldier training battery, 24 Battery, takes all new Gunner soldiers from Phase 1 training at Pirbright, Winchester or Harrogate and trains and inculcates them in being a Gunner. They are taught to operate complex radio systems, drive civilian and military vehicles, undertake basic close combat skills and learn about Gunner ethos and history. 24 Battery is staffed by some of the very best instructors the Gunners have and in the year 2008/2009 857 soldiers were delivered from 24 Battery to the deployable Regiments. A significant number of those soldiers have since deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

One major advantage of being a part of 14 Regiment is that the levels of responsibility invested in the Junior Officers, SNCOs and JNCOs are significantly greater than elsewhere. The officers and soldiers are routinely expected to work to a level far higher than they would in their Parent Regiments; along with some first class personal development this proves to be an excellent experience for everyone and confirms why a posting in 14 Regiment is such a beneficial activity.
