Operations, Training and Events
2011 has seen another busy start to the year for 12 Regiment Royal Artillery. 14 Soldiers, from all 4 of our batteries, returned in March from a demanding 6 month tour of Afghanistan where they provided crucial surveillance coverage to the British patrol bases. 70 members of 12 (Minden) Battery deployed in March to Afghanistan once again to provide this important capability. T (Headquarters) Battery has deployed its Battlespace Managers to Afghanistan to ensure that the indirect fires called in by the troops in contact are safely deconflicted with the air and aviation assets. 58 (Eyre's) Battery have deployed soldiers to support exercises in Kenya and Cyprus and 9 (Plassey) Battery have conducted challenging exercises within the UK. Members of 12 Regiment Royal Artillery have also taken part in exercises in the USA and Germany.
12 Regiment Royal Artillery has a work hard, play hard attitude and encourages its soldiers to take part in as many extra mural activities as possible. It possesses strong rugby, football, sailing, skiing and polo teams. There are also many adventurous training expeditions planned soon both in the UK and abroad. Thorney Island is home to the Royal Artillery Watersports Centre and many of the soldiers are keen sailors, kite surfers and windsurfers. The facilities, here, are superb and Thorney Island is the Army's sailing centre of excellence as well as a teaching facility.
