207 (Glasgow) Battery

Welcome to the web pages of 207 Battery, The Lanarkshire and Lothian Gunners. The Battery is one of three that make up 105 Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers).

We are based in two locations, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The TA centre in Glasgow houses the Battery Headquarters (Cameronian) and C (Lanark) Troop; whilst D (Lothian) troop are based in Edinburgh.

Both locations are purpose built TA centres and provide us with various facilities, including classrooms, drill halls, stores, kitchens and bars.

The Regiment is equipped with the 105mm light gun; a formidable piece of weaponary capable of delivering a high explosive shell, with pin point accuracy, at ranges of up to 17km.

The gun is extremely maneuverable, and whilst usually towed by a 4 wheel drive vehicle, it is also capable of being carried by helicopter or even parachuted from an aircraft. This flexibility makes it a very useful asset on the modern battlefield.

Most of the Battery's training is based around this role. Soldiers have to be trained to operate and maintain the weapon and its ammunition. They are also trained in leadership, first aid, vehicle driving and servicing, the use of two way radios, map reading, small arms handling and marksmanship, physical fitness and even survival in a chemical or nuclear environment.

The Battery trains every Wednesday evening at both Glasgow and Edinburgh TA centres. At least one weekend a month, soldiers from the two locations will come together to train at one of the two TA centres, or one of the many Army training areas across the Central Belt or the North of England.

On several weekends each year, the Battery joins the rest of the Regiment in a much larger Regimental training exercise. Due to the large number of personnel and equipment involved, these usually take place in one of the Army's larger training areas, such as Otterburn in Northumbria.

Once a year, the whole Regiment attends a two week annual camp. This usually takes one of three forms - two weeks of intensive classroom and practical training and sports; a two week exercise in the field; or two weeks overseas camp - usually as a combination of both training and time spent on exercise.

Since 2001, the Regiment has held annual camps in locations as diverse as North Dakota (USA), Gibraltar, Cyprus, Salisbury Plain and Warcop in Cumbria.

In addition, the Battery is also responsible for firing Salutes at Edinburgh Castle and providing personnel to fire the One O'Clock gun when the full time 'District Gunner' is unavailable.
