206 (Ulster) Battery
ABOUT US
206 (Ulster) Battery is a Territorial Army unit based in Northern Ireland. The Battery consists of about 80 people who are 'Part Time' soldiers which means that the men and women of the Battery give up their spare time to train and learn Military Skills so that they may support the Regular Army whenever required.
The Battery is equipped with the 105mm Light Gun, a world class Artillery Gun which is currently used by 29 Commando Regt RA and 7 Para RHA in the regular Army. Under the Future Army Sructures (FAS) Programme, the British Army is changing to produce a much more mobile and versatile force.
Although the Battery is to be equipped with the Lt Gun, it's soldiers will support regular AS90 Artillery regiments on Operations world wide. Soldiers from the Battery have previously served in Iraq on Operation Telic 6.
CEREMONIAL
The Battery also has a real time ceremonial role, in that we fire Royal Salutes from Hillsbourough Castle five times per year.
LOCATIONS
The Battery has two locations in Northern Ireland:
- Newtownards - Battery Headquarters, REME Detachment and Lt Gun Troop
- Coleraine - Lt Gun Troop
HISTORY
The Battery was formed in 1993 after Options For Change and the disbandment of 102 (Ulster) Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers). The two old batteries of 206 (Coleraine) Battery and 215 (North Down) Battery were amalgamated to form 206 (Ulster) Battery.
The new Battery was absorbed into 105 Regiment to make the "Ulster and Scottish Gunners" along with 207 (City of Glasgow) Battery, 212 (Highland) Battery and the Regimental Headquarters.
