14 Regiment RA Soldier

Bombardier Grimshaw

"I joined the Army in 2004 and on completion of training was posted into J (Sidi Rezegh) Battery, 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (3 RHA) in Hohne, Germany.

"During my time at 3 RHA I deployed twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. Whilst in Iraq I served in the infantry role in addition to manning the guns. Whilst based at Patrol Base Budwan in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, my Battery fired over 1000 High Explosive rounds in support of ISAF operations.

"In 2013 I was posted to 34 (Seringapatam) Battery RA, the firing support battery of the Royal Regiment of Artillery on a two year Extra Regimental Employed (ERE) posting. I am employed as a detachment commander on the L118 Light Gun and AS90.

"This involves having five soldiers under my command and deploying regularly onto Salisbury Plain Training Area for live firing. I am responsible for the maintenance of my gun, vehicles and equipment when in barracks. Whilst at the Battery I have completed the L118 Light Gun Detachment Commander’s course and also the Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear (CBRN) Instructor’s course.

"I have also been involved with the preparation for the Battery’s firing of the Royal Salute at the Tower of London and trials for the new generation of Artillery fuzes. However, the day-to-day gunnery is what appeals to me most. As a gun detachment commander, I am afforded far more firing than at regimental duty and the Battery has fired 26,000 rounds this year, more than the rest of the Royal Artillery combined.

"My career highlights include travelling to four different continents on either operations or major exercises. Another highlight was spending six months leading a Battery of AS90s across the Canadian Prairie. I have also worked in conjunction with other nations, in particular during an exercise in the Czech Republic."
