'Gunners Today' Grand Opening
Firepower Museum, Royal Arsenal, Woolwich SE18 6ST
On Thursday, 16 June, the 'Gunners Today' exhibition at Firepower was officially opened by the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Sir David Richards GCB CBE DSO ADC Gen.
LBdr Steven Gadsby CGC, 26, marked the official opening by presenting his Conspicuous Gallantry Cross to be exhibited as part of this new display at Firepower. His medals were accepted for the regiment and museum by General Sir David.
Following this moving ceremony, The King's Troop RHA, 7 Para RHA, The RA Band and The Pipes and Drums of 19 and 40 Regts RA provided a rousing display, much to the delight of the assembled guests.
This new exhibition marks the vital contribution the Royal Regiment of Artillery continues to make to military operations, focusing on the considerable and ongoing tours of duty undertaken by the Royal Artillery since 1982.
This first phase tells the tale of the 'ordinary' soldier and his or her experience of life on the front line during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, including an overview of the campaign (the where, the why and the how); the development of artillery (the guns and associated technology that is used and continuously developed during each of the campaigns); and The Modern Gunner (the human aspect of life as a Gunner - before, during and after a campaign - told in their own words).
The subsequent phases will include many other campaigns including the Falklands War, Northern Ireland, the First Gulf War, Sierra Leone and the Balkans
The Museum is open Wednesday to Sunday (10.30am - 5.00pm)
During school holidays the museum is open seven days a week,
and is open on all bank holidays.
