How to become a Gunner

Consider your options

Your first step is to visit your local Armed Forces Careers Office - just look up 'Army' in your local telephone directory to find your nearest one. Then go and meet an Army Careers Advisor. He or she will ensure you meet the Army's entry conditions, such as age, nationality and residency, and advise you on your options.

Need more time?

If you have not decided whether to join the Army, or want to return to full-time education with possible financial sponsorship, tell your Army Careers Advisor and they will stay in touch. Meantime, why not try an Insight Course to experience Army life first-hand?

Initial Tests

You will take some basic tests and assessments to see which area of the Army best suits you.  This will include an interview, and will take place at your local Army Careers Information Office.  Your Army Careers Advisor will then discuss the options available to you.

Final Tests

Next, you will attend a two-day course at an Army Development and Selection Centre (ADSC) where you will undergo fitness, health and team tests to determine your suitability for an Army career.

Did not make it?

If you did not meet the required standards, there may be an opportunity for you to retake the tests. Your Army Careers Advisor will let you know the areas you need to work on, which means you will be better prepared next time.

Congratulations

You will now be offered a place on Phase 1 training, a 14-week course designed to give you the skills a soldier needs.  On the first day of training you will formally enlist in the British Army.  Phase 2 of your training takes place at the Royal School of Artillery at Larkhill in Wiltshire.
