WHAT IS THE FE BURSARY?
The FE Bursary Scheme, or FEBS as it is known, gives the opportunity for students studying any Level 2 FE subjst (or higher), to be awarded a maximum of £4000 while they are studying and after their Phase 1 Training in the British Army
If you are about to start a Level 2 course (or higher) at and FE establishment
OR
You are already studying on a Level 2 course (or higher)
£1,000 after completion of each year of an FE (Further Education) course
£1,000 after completion of Phase 1 Training
you could earn up to £4,000
Who can apply?
If you are aged between 16 and 32 and are going into Further Education, or you’re already on a course and want a guaranteed job in the Army secured at the end of the course, the Bursary is for you.
Do I have to do a specific course?
It doesn’t matter which subject you are studying, from horticulture to hairdressing and from public services to ITC, all courses are recognised by the scheme. You don’t even have to choose an Army job that is similar to the course you have taken, but with over 140 different types of jobs in the Army its easy to find a way to use what you’ve learned. When you have joined, you’ll get extra training to help you get more skills for the job you have chosen. On top of this you’ll be able to pick up more vocational qualifications along the way as most army courses are linked with civilian qualifications.
What do I need to do now?
- A student who is interested contacts either their local Army Careers Office or Army Careers Adviser.
- They will then be put forward to attend a selection at a regional testing centre, to be sure that they are medically and physically fit enough to join the Army. You don’t have to be an athlete, all you need is a good standard of fitness.
- Sign the relevant paperwork that commits the individual to completing the FE course (full time courses only) and joining the army at the end of their FE education.
Why is the Army doing this scheme?
We want our future soldiers to have the best chance of a full career when they join us, to enhance the chances of this, we pay for students to stay on in education and better themselves academically. It’s not an easy time of life for many individuals when they are about to embark on a new direction in life. Do they stay on in college and not be financially enhanced? Or do they drop out of education and go for a job that gives them money in their pocket at the risk of not getting a job in the future that they are capable of but have no qualifications to back up their intellectual abilities. The Army recognises this dilemma and tries and make it an easier decision for some by giving students the Further Education Bursary to stay on in college and get a financial reward.
We want our potential recruits to be committed to joining the British Army. By staying on in education and the joining the British Army individuals are demonstrating that commitment.
