Medical Support Officer (MSO)
Providing the military expertise within the RAMC, the MSOs fill the majority of the command appointments within medical Units.
MSOs also provide the majority of the medical planning for operations, as well as co-ordination of movement of casualties around an operational theatre. An MSO may find themselves in command of a varied team of professionally qualified officers and highly trained soldiers.
Good communication and teamwork skills are essential, and a junior MSO must be able to form an effective working relationship with a variety of ranks from Private to Lieutenant Colonel, providing leadership and command to those providing the clinical expertise.
An MSO must be robust and confident in their decision-making, and be capable of operating under a great deal of pressure.
