205 Field Hospital Careers

Graham House Regimental Headquarters and Training Centre for G Squadron
Opportunities for Professionally Qualified Officers
NHS Scotland and other employers in the healthcare sector are positive in their support of their employees joining the Territorial Army. They recognise that in joining the TA Medical Services you will have the opportunity to expand on your existing skills and experience, while developing your confidence and leadership abilities and having some serious fun.
The TA Medical Services is a major component of the UK Defence Medical Services. 205 (Scottish) Field Hospital (Volunteers) is the only TA Medical Services hospital located in Scotland. It has its Regimental Headquarters in Glasgow with Squadrons located in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. These locations have been specifically selected to be near large teaching hospitals and accessible to Doctors, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) wishing to join the Reserve Forces. In order to be able to achieve this it relies on healthcare professionals like you.
Having served in Gulf War 1, the Unit recently returned to the Gulf. A Hospital Squadron supporting 3 Close Support Medical Regiment in Shaibah, near Basra, was provided by 205 (Scottish) Field Hospital (Volunteers). They served for six months carrying out many of the duties and more giving the same quality of service which would have been given within the National Health Service.
As a volunteer serving with the TA the commitment is flexible, being as little as 27 days per year at the TA centre or away at weekends. These are held at various camps throughout Scotland on an average of one weekend a month, though attendance is required only 3 or 4 times a year. Flexibility is built in as we appreciate most hospital staff, as well as other professions, work for the NHS at weekends.
Opportunities also exist to serve full time for periods from one month to three years, with the Regular Army, in places as far away as Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kenya, Cyprus, the Falklands, and many others. In addition, the opportunity exists to accompany many of the adventure training expeditions that are conducted worldwide by the Regular Army. This year, for example, a large number of Unit members are participating in the Army Medical Services Ski Meeting in Serre Chevalier, France, with another number going cross-country skiing in Norway.
In addition there are many civilian and military courses available for you to attend, which are seen by many outside agencies as career enhancing. One such course is the Army's renowned Battlefield Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Skills (BARTS). The unit also runs, in conjunction with the BASICS Faculty, a Pre-Hospital Emergency Care and the Major Incident Medical Management Course (MIMMS). As well as the military training there are also numerous occasions to socialise, whether it be in the TA Centre, at weekend camps, or during annual camp in the surroundings of the Officers' Mess and outside venues.
Reserve Force membership gives numerous advantages for the employer, the individual and the patient. In addition, the training includes transferable skills with some qualifying as Continuous Professional Development and SVQ's. Through training volunteers become cohesive team players at a fraction of the cost to the employer.
