34 Field Hospital
34 Field Hospital is one of three Regular Field Hospitals available to deploy in peacetime.
The unit was formed on 1 Apr 96 with 23 personnel, and based within Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Strensall.
The unit was declared operational on 1 Oct 1996. Since it's formation the unit has deployed to operations in Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Iraq.
During Operation TELIC 1 in Iraq, 34 Field Hospital treated in excess of 3500 people. Many of its patients were Iraqi civilians, including children.
The deployment was unique in that the Field Hospital deployed forward of the Role 2 medical units and some 5 km from the enemy stronghold of Az Zubayr.
This meant British casualties were transferred almost directly from point of wounding to the Field Hospital. In addition this was the first occasion, probably since the First World War, that a British Field Hospital deployed into enemy territory.
