The Regiment is currently based in Dempsey Barracks, Sennelager, Germany where it has been stationed since December 2007 and is the Formation Reconnaissance (Recce) regiment for 20th Armoured Brigade.
The Regiment is formed up with three Sabre (Recce) Squadrons (Sqns) and a Headquarters Squadron (HQ Sqn). Each of the Sabre Sqns is equipped with twelve Scimitar light tanks which are armed with a 30mm cannon and a general purpose machine gun, these are the main recce and scouting vehicles that are used. They are crewed by highly trained, intelligent soldiers who are selected for their ability to work alone and with minimal direction. The crew uses stealth and guile to get close to the enemy without being seen, providing the commander with timely and accurate information so that he is fully aware of what is happening on the battlefield.
Each Sqn also has six Spartans, these are crewed by Snipers, fast jet controllers and Javelin anti tank missile operators. These specialised troops work to support either the Scimitars scouting forwards or other friendly forces on the battlefield. They do this by using observation posts dug into the ground, keeping out of sight until the right moment and then striking hard into the enemy.
HQ Sqn provides the logistical support to the Regiment. They too, find themselves on the front line driving trucks with supplies, fuel and ammunition enabling the Sabre Sqns to work for long periods in front of the main friendly force.
Unlike the rest of 20th Armoured Brigade the Regiment has its own barracks in Sennelager. The camp has a lot of facilities including, free internet connection, sports fields, an impressive gymnasium and a modern bar. The camp also has a newly opened dining area, where you can choose anything from snacks and salads to a hot dinner every day of the week. Single soldiers of the Regiment live in camp with their colleagues in newly modernised Sqn blocks, married soldiers live in quarters outside of camp.
