Our Role

Challenger 2 Tank

The Royal Wessex Yeomanry has three roles.

  • The training of Challenger 2 main battle tank crewmen as Turret Crew Replacements.
  • Armour Replacement.
  • The provision of skilled officers and senior non-commissioned officers to support the Regular Army on operations as watchkeepers and liaison officers.

The three roles are shared between all four squadrons who, in addition, maintain basic soldier skills and fitness.

THE SQUADRONS

A (The Dorset Yeomanry) Armour Replacement Squadron is the Armour Replacement (AR) Squadron for the British Army.

As well as delivering the requirement the Squadron's job also includes the development of Armour Replacement doctrine and capability.  They are considered the British Army's experts in battlefield replacement of armour.

B (The Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry) Squadron, C (The Royal Gloucestershire Hussars) Squadron and D (Royal Devon Yeomanry) Squadron train and provide Challenger 2 crewmen in support of Regular regiments of the Royal Armoured Corps.

All four squadrons train officers and senior non-commissioned officers for command, watchkeeping and liaison duties.
