Sports and social life
The Royal Yeomanry offers plenty of opportunities to take part in sport, adventurous training and social events in the UK and all over the world. Most of these activities are either heavily subsidised or count as formal training. Formal training is done in Army time, so everything, including travel, food and accommodation is free of charge, and you get paid simply for taking part.
Members of the RY have in the recent years taken part in:
- Surfing in Newquay
- Sailing in the Caribbean
- Skiing in Bavaria and Verbier
- Skydiving, horse riding and canoeing in Canada
- Mountain climbing and abseiling in Dartmoor
- Quad-biking in Germany
- Clay pigeon shooting
- Hill walking and trekking all over the UK
- and much more
Our sporting calendar is equally busy, with the RY fielding teams against other military and civilian teams at all levels and varieties of sport – from bike polo and more traditional polo to rugby and cricket.
Sports and adventurous training have a serious aim, as it helps make the soldiers who take part fitter, more motivated and closer team memebers. The fact that it can also be a lot of fun to take part in enjoyable activities in interesting places all over the world, while being paid, is just one of the things that make life in the TA such a good thing.
Life in the Territorial Army has always been very social, and the close bonds formed during training and in serving together on operations are the basis for lifelong friendships. Every Squadron, and the Regiment as a whole, organises many informal and formal social events. These include nights in our Squadron bars, formal dinners, BBQs, concerts with the Regimental Band and much more.
The TA is an ideal opportunity to try new things, and to keep up with activities you might not otherwise have the chance (or funds) to do as much as you would otherwise like to. The teamwork is second to none, and the bonds and friendships formed with your fellow soldiers lifelong.
