What we do

As well as formation reconnaissance and CBRN defence, our soldiers are all skilled in operating as dismounted infantry. Hundreds of RY soldiers have served alongside many of the Regular reconnaissance regiments whether in fighting vehicles or on foot, on front-line and in peace-keeping operations over the past few years in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Under recent changes to the Army’s structure, the Royal Yeomanry has grown, with the formal role to support the Formation Reconnaissance Regiments and the Joint CBRN Regiment on operations by providing skilled CBRN reconnaissance soldiers. In addition, we give our affiliated regiments soldiers skilled in specialised roles such as Forward Air Controller.

Our reconnaissance role gives us the skills and equipment to be able to actively seek out real-time information and communicate this quickly across large distances. This ability alongside our flexibility, mobility and CBRN expertise, gives the RY a vital role as part of the UK’s resilience response to any terrorist attack or large-scale emergency.

The RY is well known for offering our soldiers a very wide mix of training, operational service and wider Army activities. Many of our soldiers have recently deployed on operations, done annual training camps, major field exercises, sports, adventurous training and much more. Whatever your interest in the Army, you will be able to find it in a fighting unit as diverse and as effective as the RY.  Our soldiers have served all over the world, and are looking to meet and recruit new people right now to join them.
