A (Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry) Squadron

A (Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry) Squadron, Royal Yeomanry is Nottinghamshire's only Army Reserve Royal Armoured Corps unit. It offers those with initiative, motivation and a taste for adventure the opportunity to train as a reconnaissance soldier in your spare time.

S Squadron in training.

Based in Nottingham, the 'Sherwood Rangers' recruit from across Nottinghamshire and the Midlands. This rich mix makes us a strong team, on the battlefield and off, in military training, adventure training, sport and socially, leading to lifelong friendships and a valuable contribution to current operations.

Our Mission

Our soldiers master the skills of Light Cavalry crewman, getting their driving licence for the RWMIK armoured reconnaissance vehicle and firing the Heavy Machine Gun and General Purpose Machine Gun. There is also the opportunity to specialise in the radio skills needed by Squadron Headquarters to run the battle and in medical, chef or stores support roles.

After Training

Alongside our military activities we have a strong social calendar with events throughout the year. We travel the world with adventure training. Recently our soldiers have been to Africa, the Middle East, Denmark, sailing with the Royal Navy, marching in blizzards in the Peak District, not to mention the windsurfing, skiing and cycling.

Continuing the old traditions.

Our cavalry culture

Our Squadron within the Royal Yeomanry is descended from the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry, and as the SRY we were the first Reserve Cavalry unit to arrive in South Africa in 1900 and the first Tank unit to cross in to Germany in 1945.

Like many Yeomanry units we were founded in 1794 to stop Napoleon’s invasion of the United Kingdom. We continue the old tradition of having an informal atmosphere but an aggressive fighting spirit!
