Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yeomanry

E Squadron, Royal Yeomanry is Leicester’s Army Reserve Light Cavalry unit. It offers those with initiative, motivation and a thirst for adventure the opportunity to train and develop as a reconnaissance soldier in your spare time.

B Squadron in training. Our role

Our soldiers master the skills of Light Cavalry crewmen, being paid to get their driving licences and off-road experience for the RWMIK armoured reconnaissance vehicle and becoming proficient with the Heavy Machine Gun and General Purpose Machine Gun.

There is also the opportunity to specialise in the enhanced radio skills needed by Squadron Headquarters to run the battle and also in medical, chef or stores support roles. We are proud of our highly operational record and culture, with a large proportion of our personnel volunteering to mobilise and serve in places as diverse as Iraq and Afghanistan and even Canada and Cyprus.

Sports and Social

We have a busy social and sporting calendar. Our formal socials, such as the annual Frezenberg Dinner, are attended by local dignitaries, family and friends and our informal get-togethers forge the friendships we thrive on as a close-knit but welcoming squadron. In sports our personnel regularly undertake skiing, sailing and mountaineering expeditions and even get paid to become qualified instructors themselves.

History

Tracing our lineage back to 1794, with the founding of both the Leicestershire and the Derbyshire Yeomanry, we draw strength from the example set by our forebears enshrined in dozens of battle honours sweeping back through time from the recent Gulf War in Iraq to South Africa in the Boer War at the end of the 1800s.
