HQ (Westminster Dragoons) Squadron

HQ Squadron, Royal Yeomanry is London’s only Army Reserve armoured corps unit. It offers those with initiative, motivation and a taste for adventure the opportunity to train as a reconnaissance soldier in your spare time.

Based by Putney Bridge station, we recruit from across London. This rich mix makes us a strong team, on the battlefield and off, in military training, adventure training, sport and socially, leading to lifelong friendships.

Our role

Our soldiers master the skills of Light Cavalry crewman, being paid to get their driving licence for the RWMIK armoured reconnaissance vehicle and firing the Heavy Machine Gun and General Purpose Machine Gun. There is also the opportunity to specialise in the radio skills needed by Command Troop to run the battle and in medical, chef or stores support roles.

Sports and social

Alongside our military activities we have a strong social side with formal and informal events throughout the year. We also have an active adventurous training side with people gaining yachting and other qualifications as well as taking part in triathlons, half marathons, skiing and cycling.A HQ Sqn, Royal Yeomanry Trooper takes the helm on a sailing expedition to France

History

Our history stretches back to the Westminster Dragoons Imperial Yeomanry raised to fight in the Boer War, and we proudly continue the traditions of courage, selfless commitment, loyalty, integrity, respect for others and discipline which have been the hallmark of the unit since its birth.
