About us

The Royal Dragoon Guards is an Armoured Cavalry Regiment. Our primary role is to provide ground mounted manned reconnaissance and a strike component to the British Army. In recent operations in Afghanistan and Iraq we have also been able to demonstrate our diversity and flexibility, taking on a variety of other front line roles, including police mentoring.

The Regiment was recently deployed to Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan on Operation HERRICK 17 with Warthog, Mastiff, Husky and Foxhound armoured vehicles. It also previously deployed on Op HERRICK 12 and to Iraq on both Operation TELIC 5 and Operation TELIC 11, demonstrating its flexibility with the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank, Warrior Infantry Fighting Vehicle and the Bulldog Armoured Personnel Carrier.

The Royal Dragoon Guards are proud to have recruited in Yorkshire and Ireland since 1685, with historical links to Cheshire and Cumbria. Many of our soldiers still come from Northern Ireland and we are still actively recruiting from Ireland.
