About Us

An RDG Challenger 2 on patrol in Basra, 2008.

The Royal Dragoon Guards is an armoured regiment. Our primary role is to provide the main battle tank and close reconnaissance component to the British Army. In recent operations in Afghanistan and Iraq we have also been able to demonstrate our diversity and flexibilty as we have taken on a varity of other front line roles.

In 2008 we returned from our second operational tour to Iraq where we provided the armoured capability for 4th Mechanized Brigade in the southern city of Basra. This operation allowed the Regiment to demonstrate its flexibility by deploying in three different vehicles - the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank and the Warrior and Bulldog Armoured Fighting Vehicles.

Since re-locating to Catterick in North Yorkshire the Regiment has completed an exciting and demanding training year which culminated in a 2 month long exercise in Canada.

The Regiment is now deployed in Helmand Province in southern to Afghanistan on Operation HERRICK 12. Follow the links on the left hand side of this web page to find out more.
