EGYPT
EGYPT are now in Afghanistan and have taken over responsibility for operating VIKING in Helmand from the Royal Marines. The handover proceeded without hitch and EGYPTIANS were deployed into the Green Zone two days before the official handover date. We have had 11 soldiers here for a month and they have had an exciting and rewarding time. They have proved that the training works and are able to operate with balance and forethought and at times, very aggressively.
The long months of training appear to have paid off and everyone feels prepared for this complex and dangerous task. Small Troops of vehicles are operating in isolated locations. The mobility afforded by the VIKING, combined with the firepower it comes with has meant that the enemy avoid close contact but try to attack using roadside bombs. We are ready for them.
Everyone is in good spirits and we are relishing the challenge. We are a close knit band, drawn closer by shared adversity and common purpose. The soldiers are living by the Regimental Motto:
Fear Naught....but the Tanks!
