BADGER

BADGER, 2nd Royal Tank Regiment has a distinguished history having served in Cyprus (1993), Northern Ireland (1997), Kosovo (2001) and Iraq on TELIC 2 in 2003, where BADGER served as part of the 1st Battalion The Kings Battle Group in four locations immediately North of AL BASRA.   They also participated on TELIC 10 in 2007, supporting the Rifles.

It has been a busy six months for BADGER. Following a hugely successful Ex MED MAN in BATUS, Canada, in the autumn of 2009, a new impetus seized the squadron. On the back of its successes, BADGER launched into a demanding New Year programme which included live firing in sunny Sennybridge and a series of Viking conversion courses in (not so sunny) Bovington. All the while the Squadron gradually grew, absorbing the Reconnaissance Troop, and quickly became the largest body of men in 2RTR. The influx of new blood was well received and served to strengthen the distinctive character of the squadron. That is, a motivated, cheerful, and hard-working body of men. The year ahead is filled with challenges: exercises, ranges, and the whole breadth of Pre-Deployment Training. But BADGER is well-established, invigorated, and ready to meet every one.

The name BADGER was held by the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment up until the amalgamation of the 2nd and 3rd Royal Tank Regiments in 1992, where it became known simply as B Squadron. The decision was taken to go back to the Squadron names in 2000 and once again BADGER came into being. The Squadron name developed following the reorganisation of the Battalions in 1923, where BADGER first came into being as "B" Coy-Light Tanks.

At this time a new system was introduced where all vehicles in "A","B" and "C" Coy took their names from the initial representing their Coy. During the Thirties, with the introduction of wireless, Coy Commanders tanks adopted names as permanent call signs. From that time onwards the Coy, the Command Tank and the Commander were known simply by the name of the tank. In 1939 the Coys were re-designated as Squadrons. BADGER Squadron was born.
