FALCON
FALCON is a medium armour squadron equipped with the Scimitar armoured vehicle.
2009 once again saw the Squadron deploying to Canada, however, this time it was working with the Royal Welsh, pitting our wits against BADGER. Following BATUS, FALCON has bonded tightly together and this put us in good stead for our live firing dismounted exercise in Wales. This week was a good reminder that first and foremost we are infantry soldiers. The Christmas period was an opportunity for the soldiers in FALCON to try something different in the form of the 2 RTR Winter Sports Programme. Of note, Cpl McMahon performed exceptionally well, winning the Army Individual Downhill.
Early 2010 saw Sergeant Major Henretty moving on to Bovington to become GSM and left FALCON in the capable hands of Mr Orr. We will also be sadly parting with our current Squadron Leader, Major James Senior after his two-year tenure. We wish GSM Henretty and Major Senior best wishes for the future.
The FALCON name comes from a D Squadron 3 RTR tank that took its names from a 6 RTR tank on amalgamation in 1959. There are records of two tanks named FALCON in WW1, FALCON 1 and 2. Both were part of 16 Coy, F Battalion of the Tank Corp. The second of which was destroyed at the Battle of Cambrai.
F Squadron 2 RTR formed on the amalgamation of 2 and 3 RTR in 1992. It was formed from Huntsman 2 RTR and D Squadron 3 RTR. It remained F Squadron until 2002 when 2 RTR readopted the practice of naming squadrons for the Squadron Leaders Tank and F Squadron and its Squadron Leader became known as FALCON
