THE ROYAL ARMOURED CORPS 70TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
2009 marks the 70th Anniversary of the formation of the Royal Armoured Corps, traditionally the main armoured manoeuvre element of the British Army.
The Corps has its roots in the old Cavalry Regiments, and The Tank Corps which amalgamated at the onset of World War 2.
During this time the Main Battle Tank has also developed over the years from the Mark 1 (the introduction of which during the Battle of Cambrai in November and December 1917 initiated a major breakout from the impasse of static trench warfare) to the current Challenger 2, one of the finest and most effective battle tanks in the world which has most recently been effectively deployed in Iraq.
The current roles in the Corps envelop the traditional armoured manoeuvre and reconnaissance operations, and also the newer role of nuclear, chemical and biological defence.
