150th Anniversary
2010 is the 150th Anniversary of the creation of the Army Physical Training Corps.
A number of events and activities will be taking place this year to commemorate this historic anniversary. We will be reporting on each event as it takes place.
Road Relay
A Road Relay will take place in April. It will begin the celebrations by echoing the move of Major Hammersley and the 12 apostles from the University gymnasium in Oxford to the current home of the Army Physical Training Corps in Aldershot.
High Horse Display Team
A High Horse Display Team of gymnasts will be formed. They will perform at the Army Show in July, the Edinburgh Tattoo in August, the Corps Reunion in September and at the Festival of Remembrance in November. The aim of the displays will be to portray the Corps gymnastic history and raise awareness of the Corps' achievements over the last 150 years.
Regimental Dinners
Two regimental dinners will be held this year.
Sports Tours
A number of sports tours will be taking place. These will celebrate the APTC's sporting history and resurrect ties with organisations in various countries. Amongst others, there will be a football and netball tour to South Africa, a kabbaddi and martial arts tour to India and a squash tour to Australia.
Expeditions
There are a number of AT expeditions and events planned. In addition to linking up with the Cadet Force, which also celebrates its 150th birthday this year, there will be also be a Trans-Globe Sailing trip, local adventurous training exercises, two major mountaineering expeditions and a climbing expedition to the Yosemite Valley in California, USA.
